Watchers

Cuz I really don't feel like doing my American Studies homework right now
and I'm now stuck in a class I really hate. The teacher is just plain ignorant. I mean come on, if you're gonna
teach in a pretty ethnically diverse state at least know your audience. She was talking about
Native American culture you know, their customs and what they believe when someone told her
she was  wrong. She just answered, "Oh well, I'll look it up later." Ok, I could understand if she was teaching
a class who had never even been exposed to that culture before but come on! I mean the person who told her she was misinformed
was Native American. She grew up in that culture and you're basically saying "oh well, let me find out from a real source."
Honestly, how much closer to the source can you get? The fact that she didn't have all her facts straight isn't the problem,
it's that she wouldn't let anyone correct her. The fact that she wouldn't listen is what really gets me.

I've had multiple teachers from other parts of the world. In fact, just about every teacher I've had for the past two years
is from some other country. But you know what? When they come in to teach a class, be it language or art, they usually
ask the students for answers from time to time. I had a foreign language teacher who had a question for us (especially the
Hispanic students) every time she started class. It was awesome to think she had a genuine interest in the culture and
wanted to know what we thought. It made me want to learn more about other places and people. It's probably one of
the main reasons I started studying foreign languages.

Come on people, if you don't something about a culture or place don't just make
assumptions. If you just ask, people will be more than happy to answer your questions.
Believe me, I know from experience :) people generally find it flattering when you take a genuine interest
in their culture.
